What is Yerba Mate?

Yerba mate, also known as erva-mate, and Ilex paraguariensis, is a slimming herb that grows mainly in South America, more specifically in Argentina, southern Chile, eastern Paraguay, western Uruguay and southern Brazil.

Yerba Mate contains alkaloid xanthines, which belong to the same family as caffeine. Yerba Mate also contains potassium, magnesium and manganese.  Caffeine content varies between 0.3% and 1.7% of dry weight (compare this to 2.5–4.5% for tea leaves, and 1.5% for ground coffee).

The Effects of Yerba Mate

The effects of Yerba Mate are to some extent similar to tea and coffee effects. Yerba Mate is reported by users to cause alertness, focus and wakefulness (common effects of tea and coffee). However, users of Yerba Mate also reported that Yerba Mate doesn’t have the negative effects of tea and coffee such as anxiety, jitteriness, and heart palpitations.
